The Volcano House is Stunning!
It perches like a large alien spaceship atop a 150-ft high volcano at the eastern end of Silver Valley road. Built in 1969, it was formerly owned by TV legend Huell Howser then donated by him to Chapman College in Orange in 2012. The college proposed to use it for astronomical observations and had some big plans, but finally decided that the distance to Newberry Springs was too far to be feasible.
The present owner is a private person who likes it that way. Caretakers live at the foot of the volcano near the gate, which is usually locked, but are friendly and easy to talk with.
The house was updated by the college, fixing the electrical, sewer, heating, ventilation and cooling systems. The 1800 sq. ft. interior was also spruced up while keeping the 1970s feel. There are only two bedrooms and two baths. Ringed with 24 glass doors that can be opened to the desert breeze, it offers spectacular views in every direction.
Unique in every way, it is worth traveling out Silver Valley Road to see, even at a distance.
